Irasshaimase. :-) Brief story of Daniel and I: I know you're probably thinking, Angel and Daniel? Where's the Himechan stuff? Please bear with me. Besides, it's a cool net "wow, the world is really changing" story. So, Daniel emails me and writes, "Hey, I'm from Jerusalem, I saw your webpage, and I'm trying to learn Japanese too. Why don't we trade emails in Japanese and help each other learn." I say, "Sounds like fun." But it takes all of one email message for me to realize that Daniel's Japanese language skills are much better than mine. So then I write, "Uh... how about we translate manga together instead. I could really use help on my Hime-chan project." And he says, "Sounds like fun." (This conversation is not being repeated verbatim-- this is more of a summary. :-) And, so, a very pleasant e-pal relationship was born. I just think this project is really neat: an anglo-American and a Jewish Israeli translating a Japanese comic into English together. What a cool time we live in. |
Hajimemashite! Yoroshiku onegai itashimasu! Daniel here. As you know from Angel's introduction, I'm new to this Hime-chan translation project, and I plan to do my best to bring you the flavour and the meaning of the Hime-chan manga in English. About me, in civilian life, I am just some shmuk from Israel who teaches chess in elementary school for a living, but on the net, I am DanZ, anime/manga fan extraordinaire! I love Japanese drawing, Japanese culture, Japanese plots, and especially Japanese animation to such an extent that aside from the new Kung Foo films, all I really watch nowadays is anime. I learnt my Japanese from anime by watching it and using a dictionary to translate what I was hearing, and later, as my Japanese skills improved, I understood more and more and understood what I was watching better and better, and it was cool. I don't really know which came first- whether I watch anime to learn Japanese, or whether I learn Japanese to understand anime, but it doesn't really matter in the end. Now, I am planning to use this project to hone my skills and improve my Kanji, and I hope the translations that result will be of some interest to all of you out there! Translating Hime-chan is going to be a pleasure, because it has a good plot, great characters, and it doesn't suck. Unlike Angel, I do not consider Hime-chan no Ribon to be among top 5 favourite animes/mangas, prefering such titles as Marmalade Boy, which I worship, but the Hime-chan manga is definitely cool, and I look forward to translating it! |
We are going to scan in only the first chapter of the first book of Hime-chan's Ribbon. If you would like to purchase the entire series, you can order all ten books (or any subset of the ten books) from the Kinokuniya Bookstores. The translations we use for the scanned pages are by Robert DeLoura.

Before we started translating the Hime-chan manga, there was another man, Robert DeLoura, that translated the first three chapters awhile back. He was very kind and gave us permission to post his translations on this website. Daniel's translations will begin from Chapter 4 forward.

| Another tiny page | This page is fairly small, but the unique thing it does boast is that it has some pictures that can't be found elsewhere. It has summaries of only four episodes. If you go into those summaries (click on the links), there is a picture with each summary. |
| Small set of pages | This is a small set of pages, but the person choose the first person approach (ie. "Hi! My name is Nonohara Himeko" type thing) which is interesting. |

Fansubs are done for free, all the money and time coming out of pocket from the fansubbers and contributors. I appreciate Arctic as much as I appreciate Tomodachi. However, Tomodachi did do a better job of subbing Himechan's Ribbon. (I've seen the entire series in both versions.) |
| Kinokuniya Bookstores | We got our manga from the San Francisco Kinokuniya Bookstore. Angel's comments: I order my manga over the phone, they mail me a bill, I mail them a check, then they mail the manga. They are helpful, inexpensive, and as quick as you possibly can be when shipping stuff over the Pacific on a boat. I'm very pleased with their service and recommend them highly. |
