New Year's Eve 1996 in Tempe

Picture

I highly recommend Tempe, Ariz. on New Year's Eve at least once in your life. The city, along with the Tostito's promotional people, put on a block party that cannot be beat. The party doubles as a pre-game and New Year's celebration.

There were six stages of entertainment in 1996 along an eight-block-long party route. Just about anyone could find the kind of music he or she preferred. I took the opportunity to watch the Monkees in person on the stage located behind our hotel.

The pictures shown here were shot using existing light on Konica 3200 speed film. This was an experiment that didn't quite go the way I hoped. Much of the problem is in the way concert stage lighting is done these days. It's hard to shoot a picture with bright light behind the subject.

Mike Nesmith did not play with the band that night. He later rejoined the group for a summer tour.
