Karla Fay Tucker gained the unique distinction of being the first female executed in Texas since the Civil War. As such the event drew world wide attention from both sides of the debate. Even the Pope made a

direct plea for clemency. Getting news of the event to the entire planet took a small army of reporters, photographers and engineers. Here are a few of the people who delivered the news around the world.

Huntsville, Texas is not a large town. Cell service is available, but not enough for the load this media event put on it. Most intelligent, forward thinking producers who bothered to check on communications arranged for telephone lines through the prison. Those who didn’t get “land lines” had a rough time getting the word in or out.

The prison officials, working with Southwestern Bell bent over backwards to see to it we had reliable communications. It wasn’t easy, especially when taking abuse from those who failed to plan ahead.

A tip of the hat goes out to Southwestern Bell and prison technicians for improvising, adapting and making it work.
