Jesse Owens was born to Henry and Emma Owens on September 12,1913. His parents were sharecroppers and he was the youngest of ten children. The family moved to Ohio, where he started his track career. Jesse Owens broke the world record in the 100m and 200m dash at the age of 17, before entering Ohio State. In 1936, Owens won four gold medals in Berlin, Germany in the 100M, 200M, long jump, and the 400M relay. Hitler snubbed Jesse after he beat the Germans on their home soil. Hitler felt that the German race was superior to the Jews and African Americans. Jesse Owens feat was tops in track and field until Carl Lewis won four gold medals at the 1984 olympics. Jesse Owens is remembered at the start that dominated the Berlin Olympics, but he also opened the door for other to make careers in the sport of Track and Field. Jesse died of lung cancer in March of 1980 in Tuscon, Arizona
